Weak-Form Efficiency
Weak-form efficiency posits that current stock prices reflect all past trading data, like historical prices and trading volumes. According to this view, scouring price charts to detect patterns, “tops,” “bottoms,” triple-witching day phenomena, or magic moving averages probably won’t grant you consistent outperformance. The rationale is that everyone can see historical price data—it’s widely available—so any predictive power in it is quickly competed away.

If you’ve ever dabbled in technical analysis, you might have encountered signals that worked for a while—maybe a golden cross or a head-and-shoulders pattern. But in a weak-form efficient market, these can’t keep working once everyone knows the trick. Semi-Strong Form Efficiency

Strong-Form Efficiency

We have insider trading cases and private data that remain undisclosed to the broader marketplace. Regulatory frameworks (like the CFA Institute Code and Standards) specifically prohibit insider trading and encourage fair disclosure; still, the possibility of undisclosed or proprietary insights makes strong-form efficiency more theoretical than practical.

Behavioral Finance Introduction
In theory, you might think that rational, self-interested individuals will always trade in ways that reflect fundamental valuation. But behavioral finance says, “Hang on, humans are not walking algorithms.” We are emotional, prone to errors, and influenced by social context. Behavioral finance shows that biases—overconfidence, herding, anchoring, and more—lead to systematic deviations from “perfect” rationality. These behavioral quirks can create market anomalies and inefficiencies.

Analysts trying to find undervalued stocks may want to keep both perspectives in mind. Yes, the market can quickly incorporate obvious news, so beating it is tough. But also yes, human behavior can create irrational swings in prices. A wise approach might combine rigorous fundamental analysis (especially around catalysts or unclear information) with an awareness of potential behavioral distortions. Sentiment indicators might track how widely bullish or bearish the crowd is. If the crowd is extremely optimistic, sometimes that’s a warning sign. Event studies measure how stock prices react around announcements. Limitations and Risks of Exploiting Biases
Just because you read about “value anomalies” or “momentum anomalies” doesn’t mean you have an easy, guaranteed method of printing money. And if you’re doing short-term arbitrage in a volatile environment, liquidity can dry up, leaving you hanging.
