Definition of Factor Investing (Smart Beta)

Low Volatility

The low-volatility factor includes securities that have historically exhibited lower price fluctuations than the broader market. While it might sound counterintuitive (you’d think higher risk would be required for higher returns), studies suggest that stocks with lower volatility can, in some periods, outperform. Behavioral explanations include investor preference for “lottery” stocks or overbidding growth prospects.
