$$ V_t = \left(F_t - F_0\right) \times e^{-r \times (T-t)}. $$
Both approaches conceptually discount the difference between the newly determined forward price and the old locked-in forward price, because you can’t collect or pay that difference until the contract matures. If the new fair forward price \(F_t\) is higher than \(F_0\), the long is sitting on a gain, and vice versa.

Imagine it like this: if the forward contract set a locked-in price of $100 for an asset, but now the market says the “fair” forward price should be $110, that’s obviously bad news for the short position (who’s obligated to sell at $100). Forward Rates for Interest Rate Contracts
