Another typical scenario might be a portfolio that was originally seeded as a small-cap equity approach—so it was in your “Small-Cap Composite.” Over time, the client or manager gradually transitions the strategy to focus on mid-cap stocks. At some point, you realize it no longer meets your official definition of small-cap equity (like if 80% of the holdings are mid-cap). If your policy states that crossing that threshold triggers a composite reclassification, you document that on, say, April 1, and move it to the “Mid-Cap Composite” from that date forward. The performance prior to April 1 stays in the small-cap composite. The mid-cap composite track record for this portfolio starts from April 1 onward.
