Here, $0.04 is your effective spread. If the quoted spread was $0.10 (50.00 to 50.10), your actual cost (just $0.04) was less than that. A negative difference (if you had executed at $50.03, below the midpoint) would indicate that you actually beat the midpoint, which can happen with good timing or a favorable shift in supply and demand while your order was in the market.

Understanding VWAP

While effective spreads gauge how your trade fared relative to the current inside quotes, the VWAP focuses on how your final execution price compares to the average price over a specified period, weighted by the trading volume at each price. In simpler terms, VWAP sums up (Price × Volume) for all trades during the period (often an intraday period) and then divides by the total volume.

If you bought shares at $9.95, you technically beat the VWAP. If you had to pay $10.05, you fell behind. For a professional money manager, continually beating the VWAP can be a source of pride—and a strong justification in performance reviews.

Post-Trade Analysis

Portfolio managers regularly compare actual fills to the effective spread and the VWAP to see if they’re doing well. For stocks with minimal intraday volume changes, the manager might rely heavily on VWAP comparisons.
