If a corporation is similarly risky to its sovereign, the total cost of debt might be around 2% + 3% = 5%. But if the corporation’s default risk is relatively higher, let’s add another 3% corporate spread, making it 8%. You’d want to check local inflation data, political environment, and currency restrictions to decide if 8% is enough or you need an even bigger premium.
Relying on the same capital structure you use in your home country might be a misstep when you operate in a country with tight credit conditions or volatile equity markets. Some critical adjustments include:
• Debt Limits: Local banks might cap loan amounts or demand more security.
• Interest Rate Environment: Substantially higher or more volatile interest rates could mean it’s cheaper to rely on equity.

• The sovereign spread or CRP data source (e.g., rating agency, bond spread, Damodaran’s database).
• Beta analysis, especially if you used a global vs. local index.

Transparency makes it easier for anyone reading your valuation (or auditing it) to check consistency and quickly see if you plugged in the correct data.
