If the market heads downward by 10%, your protective puts may offset most of that 10% drop, effectively limiting your net loss to around 5%, minus the premium. But if the market doesn’t fall at all, you’ve spent $50,000 “unnecessarily.” That’s the trade-off—like paying insurance premiums on your house, hoping you’ll never need to file a claim.
