If the jurisdiction taxes capital gains at the same 30% rate, then the tax liability on the sale is 30% × $100,000 = $30,000. But the book’s income statement only shows a $50,000 gain. So the company’s effective tax rate might look higher in that quarter due to the bigger tax basis difference.
